Community Commerce…

Give Back and Fight Poverty!

10% of SheaMoisture Community Commerce sales go to women-led businesses, to support communities that supply ingredients for our products, or to support The Sofi Tucker Foundation. We founded Community Commerce to support these communities, especially those that source and make some of the key ingredients in SheaMoisture products. We help fund training and infrastructure to help them manufacture their own high quality goods in their countries, and get fair prices for their goods and labor. This helps them to earn a better living and support their families, making a better life possible within their communities. It’s not a donation. It’s an investment in a fairer world. In the spirit of the holiday…

The Sofi Tucker Foundation

Founded by the owners of Sundial Brands in 2012, and incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit, public charity, the Sofi Tucker Foundation supports causes inspired by the woman whose life’s work forms the basis for Sundial Brands products.

In 1912, as a young widow, Sofi Tucker sold African Black Soap and hand crafted Shea Butter based skin products in the village market and throughout the countryside of Bonthe, Sierra Leone.

In her memory, the foundation provides financial grants to organizations that seek to economically empower women, their families and communities in the United States and in Africa.

The Todee Mission School of Liberia

The Todee Mission School was founded in 1945. During Liberia's civil crisis from 1990 until 2004, the Mission was looted and devastated.

In 2006 a renovation was started through the benevolence of church members in Virginia and Mr. and Mrs. Carney Johnson.

Todee became their project to help rebuild Liberia. Mrs. Ophelia Johnson is the Board Chairwoman and guiding light of the Mission.

Since then, the Todee School has grown to 110 students from 13 counties in Liberia. There are 57 boys and 53 girls attending classes from Pre-K to 9th grade.

Perched on a rolling hill in northern Montserrado County, the Mission owns 200 acres of land that abuts the Firestone rubber plantation. The school is accredited by the Liberia’s Ministry of Education.

Students engage in a full academic curriculum, vocational classes and undergo life skills training. Many of Todee's students are boarders and the Mission is their home.

Indeed, it is the school's policy to not turn a child away if their parents or family cannot pay tuition. Most students are paid through scholarships, or through in-kind contributions of food or other staples and supplies.

In 2013, the Sofi Tucker Foundation sent two New York high school students on a summer enrichment program to work with the students of the mission to teach them literacy skills, arts and crafts, computer skills and also to exchange cultural experiences.

Each participant went to Liberia equipped with a new lap top with learning and processing software to donate to the school for future use.

The students also brought a printer, ink cartridges, school supplies and books. According to Mrs. Ophelia Johnson, Chairwoman of the school,

"The enrichment program was a fantastic opportunity for the students to exchange views with the American students and to learn about how to use computers and literacy. All the boys and girls had the most fantastic experience. We want to thank the Sofi Tucker Foundation and Sundial Brands for this amazing program."

In addition, the Sofi Tucker Foundation, through a generous donation from Sundial Brands, awarded a cash grant of $18,000 to Todee Mission in support of agriculture programs, student scholarships and teacher training in 2014.

Including the Summer Enrichment program, Sofi Tucker Foundation support to Todee School amounted to over $23,000 in 2013.
